BENEDETT, Ted, 89, of Wheeling, WV, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Liza’s Place, Wheeling. He was born February 20, 1921, in Wheeling, son of the late Jack Benedett, Sr. and Leathel Eikey Benedett. Mr. Benedett was the owner of Ted Benedett Claims Service for forty years. He was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran, and a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elm Grove. Ted was well known for his athletic prowess beginning at Triadelphia High School, where he lettered in football and track & field. He furthered his education at Eastern Kentucky University, again starring in football and track for 3 years before WWII and one year following a blessed return home. He graduated from EKU in 1947 with a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Shortly before graduation, he met and married the woman of his dreams, Virginia Spurlin, with whom he would raise three wonderful children, Jack, Judi, and Ted Jr. After becoming a husband he began as teacher and basketball coach for Madison Junior High and football coach for Wheeling High school. Fatherhood became his next chapter within his most incredible life’s journey. Later he embarked upon a personal business venture, Ted Benedett Claims Service, an insurance company which he continued for 40 years servicing the tri-state area. Ted enjoyed playing golf with his most precious wife and leading her around the dance floor. He was so loved and admired by all of those his life touched, and his love for family was valued beyond all. Ted’s attitude and outlook on life was summed up in his own daily motto: “The Lord is good to me, he gave me my Queen.” In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ted Benedett, Jr. in 1995. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Spurlin Benedett; a daughter, Judi Hladek and her husband, John of St. Clairsville, OH; a son, Jack Benedett, II and his wife, Cecelia of Cincinnatti, OH; a brother, William Benedett and his wife, Kathleen of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Gino, Gabriella, Vincente, Mario, Candice and Jack Benedett, III; Matthew, Mark and Luke Hladek; and two great-grandchildren.
