I remember Aunt Betty for her courage, intelligence and determination. As a young mother of 3 daughters, she received her GED from high school and spent years studying for her teaching degree in science. I remember seeing her study a vocabulary list, taped to the wall, while she washed dishes in the kitchen sink. During this process, she blossomed into a confident, educated, intelligent woman. After college graduation, she packed up her belongings and her youngest daughter and drove west to Oregon to make a new life. She taught school there and married a fine, respected doctor, who left her widowed a few years later. She eventually remarried and stayed in the northwest until her retirement, when she and her husband packed up and made the cross country trip back to West Virginia. Aunt Betty never gave up on a goal. Her determination, her true grit, is to be greatly admired.
My husband, Byron, and I will miss her very much. Our hearts go out in sympathy to her family.
