Jean Hollandsworth Whiting, of the Dement Road area of Triadelphia, WV, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hollandsworth, deceased, of Charleston, WV, died on February 9, 2012, at 80 years of age.

She and her husband, C. Robert Whiting, were married for 55 years and are both survived by a son, Charles Robert, II, and his wife, Lori, of Wheeling, WV, a daughter, Lisa E. Marple and her husband, Randy, of Shadyside, Ohio, 4 grandchildren and a great grandchild, a sister-in-law, Joann McKee Hollandsworth, and nieces, nephews, and their many progeny.

A Psychologist who received her Masters from WVU and additional training at Penn State, she worked many years in the local school systems. She also had a private practice during many of those years.

Prior to coming to the Wheeling area, she worked at WVU, Hofstra College, NY, Stanford University, Penn State and at the College of Guam. She served as a psychologist for West Virginia Child Welfare and for Vocational Rehabilitation.

She was the recipient of many scholastic awards including the Chi Omega Achievement Award; a Fullbright Scholarship, which lead to her studying in England; Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa Honorary. She graduated the Valedictorian from Stone Wall Jackson High School, Charleston, WV, and Summa cum laude from WVU.

Locally she was active in community affairs as a member of the Junior League, and King's Daughters Circle. She served on the board established at Northwood Health Systems and, as well, on the boards of Florence Crittenton and the Russell Nesbitt School. Although very busy, Jean found time to do what she loved and traveled the world with her husband, Bob."

In honoring the wishes of Jean and her husband Bob, who passed away together, in their home, on February 9, 2012, there will be no funeral service. Instead, there will be held a Celebration of Jean's and Bob's Life for family and friends at Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28 on the corner of 47th and Jacob Street, Wheeling, at which time, the family asks that you please bring your favorite memories and photos to share and to record. The Celebration will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19th. The Family hopes that all who had the pleasure of knowing Bob and Jean understand and honor their wishes.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Crittenton Services, Inc., at www.florencecrittenton.net or to your choice of the following Volunteer Fire Departments: Valley Grove, Clearview, Triadelphia, Mozart, Stone Church, West Liberty and West Alexander or one close to your home.

So very sad you had to go but glad you are in a better place. You made me laugh all the time and cry sometimes and I will miss you so much. I just wish I had one last chance to say goodbye. Rest in peace now Jean, I love you!
