He was born December 26, 1927, the only child of the late Elmer Z. and Mary A. Welty.
John was a lifelong resident of Wheeling. He graduated from Triadelphia High School and received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, with a minor in alchemy from Carnegie Institute of Technology. Following graduation, Mr. Welty returned to Wheeling and entered the family business, Welty Buick, Inc., as an automobile dealer. He served as its president until his retirement in 2005. John is one of eight individuals to receive the prestigious General Manager's Seal of Excellence Award from General Motors.
John Welty served on several boards, including The Children's Home of Wheeling and Wesbanco Bank.
He was a member of General Motor's National Automobile Dealer's Council, Wheeling Elks Club, the Fort Henry Club, the Twilight Club, and was member in good standing of Sam's Club.
He was a man of great humor and deep compassion; a true gentleman and respected citizen.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Paul Welty.
He was survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Henry (John) of Charleston, WV. and Mary Ellen Gano (David) of Dumfries, VA; a son John Paul Welty (Gail) of Wheeling; stepsons, Tom Rownd (Denise) of Wheeling, James Rownd (Paula) of Shaker Heights, OH and stepdaughter, Deborah Bogden (Ken) of Huron, OH;10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012 at the Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling (304-232-2732). Services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Vance Presbyterian Church, Wheeling, with the Reverend Dr. Charles D. LaPlaca officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
In lieu of flowers donations may be offered Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, 905 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003 or to the Children's Home, of Wheeling Foundation 1 Orchard Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.
