I never met Mel personally, having been in the Department from 1957-1960, but we had been in contact recently in regard to a book he was writing. I am saddened by his passing.

I had no interest in Microbiology before I took Mel's Pollution Microbiology course at Rutgers 20 years ago. He made it so interesting that I decided to be a microbiologist. Several years later I earned a PhD in the subject and I have enjoyed the field ever since. He was a great teacher. God bless him.
